What If My Friend Or Family Member Is Being Abused?
It can be hard to know what to do when someone you care about is being hurt. The most important thing you can do is be there to listen and provide support without judgment. You can also:
- Provide them with information about domestic violence resources
- Remind them that she does not deserve to be abused – no one does
- Keep in touch – survivors of domestic violence often experience intense isolation
- Express your concern for their safety and the safety of their children
- Encourage them – constant emotional abuse robs survivors of their self-esteem, help them to identify their personal strengths
- Be specific about how you can help (providing transportation, childcare, financial assistance)
- If you witness or hear domestic abuse, call 911
